Vulgar Necrolatry (1990)

Formed in 1989, the Finnish death metal band Abhorrence didn't last too long but they left behind some of the darkest and most evil recordings of the time period. The 1990 Vulgar Necrolatry demo bears a similar style to the likes of Crematory and Incantation, though even more sinister and hellish. The haunting tremolo riffs that slither in an out of the songs add so much to the atmosphere, along with the heavy doom riffs and infernal solos. Even though the title track was re-recorded by Amorphis a couple different times, it never sounded as cacophonous and morbid as it did here. These songs were re-released along with the Abhorrence E.P. on the Completely Vulgar compilation some years back so there if you haven't heard this seek it out with haste.

Abhorrence (1991)

Abhorrence was a short-lived band from Finland. Recorded in mid-1990 the band's self-titled E.P. features four songs of morbid death metal that continued on from where the Vulgar Necrolatry demo left off. This would go on to be the basic template for Finnish (and some Swedish) death metal of the early '90s though rarely could any that followed manage to sound this evil. This brief recording is filled with haunting tremolo melodies and crushing riffs that convey a sense of doom. The production here is perfect for the material, retaining a gritty sound that's heavy but still allows for everything to be heard. There are definitely similarities between this and the Privilege of Evil E.P. from Amorphis, largely due to the presence of guitarist Tomi Koivusaari. Instead of ripping off Entombed a hundred times, Nordic death metal bands should have been trying their best to follow in the footsteps of Abhorrence. If you have never listened to this, rectify that immediately. This is essential!
