Aullido sepulcral (1987)

Astaroth was a Colombian band that only existed for a couple of years. Their only official release, the 1987 Aullido sepulcral demo, is a raw and chaotic piece of death/thrash. The sound isn't far from what their fellow countryment Masacre and Parabellum were doing at the time. Much like the latter, the sound on this demo has a thin and fuzzy guitar tone though this material is much more straightforward. The vocals are hellish and evil and suit this primitive music perfectly. The playing isn't always super tight, but that hardly matters with stuff like this and actually adds to the atmosphere.

South American bands from this period often seemed much more capable of conjuring a genuine sense of darkness that was hinted at but rarely achieved by a lot of better-known bands. Aullido sepulcral only features two songs, clocking in at less than ten minutes, but it's still well worth listening to.
