Fuckin' Death (1985)

Fuckin’ Death was recorded in January 1985 and is the first demo from Chicago’s Death Strike. The production is raw, but unlike many demos from this era, this doesn't sound like the tape was chewed up. Everything can be heard clearly, and it's not far off from some of the lower-budget albums of the time.

The music is a mixture of chromatic death metal passages, aggressive thrash riffs and hellish solos, most evident on hateful, wretched tracks such as "The Truth" and "Mangled Dehumanization". The songwriting is primitive, but the expanded version shows more variation, with haunting leads and slower riffs inspired by Celtic Frost, though much nastier and uglier. This comes through especially on tracks like “The Final Conflict” and "Embryonic Misconceptions”. The material really goes back and forth from tearing your throat out during the early songs to bashing your skull in throughout the latter half.

The vocals are harsh, but you can still hear the voice underneath. There’s a shouted quality to them, and at times they’re reminiscent of early Possessed, Hellhammer/Celtic Frost and even a bit of Discharge, traces of which can also be heard in the music. All in all, Fuckin' Death is a violent assault of barbaric hate. While the original tape is solid enough, the 1991 reissue includes several other tracks from the same session. Recommended for anyone into savage '80s death/thrash from the days when the underground was still a vile and dangerous place.
