Neuropatalog (1991)

Released in 1991, Neuropatolog was the first full-length album by the Czechoslovakian band Debustrol. This is pure '80s-sounding thrash metal with semi-harsh vocals. The music is a little more straightforward than their countrymen Sax. The lyrics are in their native Czech, which gives it a somewhat strange feeling. Whatever the meaning, the vocals carry a sense of anger and conviction that comes through clearly. The production is pretty decent in the sense that everything can be heard fine, but it doesn't have that sterile, polished '90s sound that would soon come to dominate almost everything. The faster-picked riffs are the best, as heard in tracks like “Protest”, “Infarkt” and “Antikrist”.

There's nothing groundbreaking on Neuropatalog, but that’s part of the charm. The '80s kind of continued on a while longer in the former Eastern Bloc. While thrash had already been watered down and mostly killed off in the West, bands like Debustrol kept the spirit alive a little longer. Definitely check this out.
