First Massacre (1988)

Recorded in December 1988, First Massacre is the only release from Dethroner before they changed their name to Enormity. This demo is an obscure piece of primal black/death from Communist-era Poland. In some ways, it sounds like a precursor to bands like Beherit and Profanatica. Musically, it’s very reminiscent of Poison, with traces of Hellhammer lurking in the riffs and atmosphere. The vocals are extremely raw deathvomits filled with maniacal hatred. The vocalist sounds like he’s going insane on tracks like "Deathlust" and "Necrochrist".

This is about as lo-fi as it gets, sounding like it was recorded live on an old boombox shoved in the corner of the rehearsal space. The mix is distant and muddy, with plenty of natural room sound bleeding through. The performance is as untight as it gets, with barely any songwriting structure and an almost improvised feel at times. First Massacre is absolutely ugly, raw, and barbaric, every note dripping with raw hatred. It doesn’t possess the pitch-black darkness of Enormity’s Slaves of Death, but the path is clear. The late ’80s Polish underground was crawling with filthy, savage black/death, and this is no exception. If you’re into chaotic, savage black/death from the era, definitely give this a listen.
