Ripped to Pieces (1993)

Diabolic Possession was a short-lived band formed in the late '80s. Their 1993 demo Ripped to Pieces is a great example of raw, hellish death metal. The music still retains a thrashy vibe at times, but what really sticks out is the insane vocal performance. The psychotic screams are evil as hell and add a primal feeling to the songs.

Despite being recorded so late, this rather primitive material sounds like something that would have been released in the late '80s alongside the likes of Death, Autopsy, and Necrophagia. One can hear traces of all three, especially on "From the Gates of Hell".

By 1993, there was already a push for the so-called brutal death metal that focused on everything but sounding dark or menacing. It’s a good thing Diabolic Possession stuck to their roots and ignored these trends. The title track kind of stands out the most but the whole recording is very consistent. Ripped to Pieces is essential for those into pure, old school death metal.
