Wedding the Grotesque (1989)

Released in 1989, Wedding the Grotesque is the second proper demo from Dr. Shrinker. This is pure '80s death metal, with raspy vocals that enhance its sinister atmosphere. The material blends faster tremolo-picked melodies, thrash riffing, and mid-paced sections that give the music weight and depth. There are moments that remind you of Death’s Scream Bloody Gore, both in its riffing and overall vibe. Some of the songs could have benefited from a hellish solo here or there, but this is a demo after all.

The sound quality isn’t the best—it’s muddy at times, with some inconsistency in levels—but that doesn’t take away from the overall effect. It’s surprising these guys weren’t signed sooner; the demo is well-developed, and there’s enough material here for a full-length. While the songwriting isn’t particularly groundbreaking, it doesn’t need to be. Wedding the Grotesque is solid, old-school death metal done right.

Standout tracks include “Cerebral Seizure” and “Open Heart Surgery,” both of which showcase the band's grasp on delivering tight, vicious death metal that’s dripping with malevolence.
