Genocídio (1988)

Genocídio's self-titled E.P. was recorded and released in 1988 and offers very raw, lo-fi death metal from Brazil. The guitars have a thin, sharp tone that dominates the recording, along with the powerful and demonic vocals. The drumming is buried in the mix quite a bit, which adds to the primitive, riff-driven material. The playing doesn't feel terribly tight and the sloppiness does hinder the intensity at times.

Musically, it feels like Genocídio is channeling the faster moments of Sepultura's Bestial Devastation. The songwriting is very straightforward and some of the riffs have a gloomy, almost black metal vibe, like those found in the later part of "Fall of Heaven" or the beginning of "Pact of Blood". There are still some hints of thrash but not much. The attempts at lead solos are rather weak and tragic, but in a way add to the primal chaos. While flawed, this material should still appeal to anyone into raw and hellish sound of the late '80s Brazilian scene. Definitely give it a listen.
