Born... Suffer... Die (1991)

Born... Suffer... Die is the first full-length album from Headhunter D.C. It was released in 1991 through Cogumelo Records and recorded at the same studio, with the same engineer, as albums from various other Brazilian bands such as Sepultura, Sarcófago, Explicit Hate, Chakal, Sextrash, and Attomica. At first listen they seem to follow in the footsteps of Sarcófago and Sextrash, but there is something different here. Right from the start, there’s an undercurrent of melody cutting through the chaos. It’s subtle, but it gives the music a character that sets it apart from the more primitive violence of their peers.
The music here is really intense death/thrash that is filled with aggressive riffs, solos and blast beats, accompanied by a vocalist who goes from raspy death vomits to the more guttural approach that was becoming the norm by this time. While leaning more toward death metal, most of this material was written at the end of the decade and thus retains a strong late '80s death/thrash feeling.
One thing worth noting is that the lyrics for some of the songs really seem at odds with the aggressive and vicious sound of the music, but in the case of this album the title and cover art aren't a celebration of darkness but a lamentation of the state of the modern world and life itself. As good as Born... Suffer... Die is, I find it strange that I've so rarely ever heard people talking about this album. This is really solid stuff and should appeal to fans of early Sarcófago and Sextrash, especially.
