Final Holocaust (1990)

Recorded in October 1989, Final Holocaust is the first full-length from the French band Massacra. Like their countrymen in Agressor, they also traveled to Germany to record the album. They went to the same studio, with the same producer who handled the Thanatos debut a month later. The result is a very solid L.P. that I haven't heard people bring up nearly enough.
This is vicious death/thrash with a cold, sharp guitar tone and a thin production that suits the music. It's quite similar to the early stuff from Protector as well as The Awakening from Merciless. The vocals are raspy and evil, and the drumming, while frantic, never drowns out the guitars. The riffs cut through everything with precision and aggression. You can hear traces of early Slayer and Kreator, but even more relentless. It keeps the aggression and momentum of thrash while darker, more ominous tones creep in through riffs that hint at chromatic movement. The faster parts are by far the best.
Final Holocaust is a really solid debut record. There’s a real sense of lethality in the playing, best demonstrated by songs like "Apocalyptic Warriors", “Researchers of Tortures” and “Beyond the Prophecy”. If you like intense and evil death/thrash from the late '80s give this a listen.
