Sicken Crazy (1991)

Recorded in November 1991, Sicken Crazy is the only release from Poland's Morbid Insane. This is raw, unclean death metal with a strong '80s feeling. The riffs and solos call to mind early Sepultura, Possessed, Death, and Obituary. The raspy, deathlike vocals sound as if they’re coming from a half-buried corpse. The production is rough but functional, with everything audible. The vocals are somewhat buried in the mix, while the drums are slightly higher than necessary, but the guitar riffs remain the focus, which is how it should be. Even the recording quality feels closer to something from the mid-to-late '80s.

The songwriting is aggressive, energetic, and a little chaotic, standing in opposition to much of the death metal being released at the time. The vibe leans more toward the Polish death/thrash scene, even though the material is built almost entirely on chromatic death metal riffs with touches of doom, creating a dark and hellish atmosphere. Morbid Insane managed to capture the raw, evil essence of early death metal, something that was already being lost by 1991. As usual, the former Eastern Bloc countries were a little behind, and in this case it enabled them to preserve this more authentic sound for a bit longer. Sicken Crazy is highly recommended for anyone into obscure, primitive death metal with an '80s spirit. Highlights include “Go Ahead” and “Guns”.
