Behind... (1990)

Behind... is the first demo tape from the Polish death metal band Necrobiosis, recorded in July 1990. The sound here is very raw and murky, with that “small” quality common to many late ’80s demos, similar to Tormentor’s The Seventh Day of Doom. The guitars are high enough in the mix and the tone is thin, which works out just fine. The goblin-esque vocals manage to stand out.

Like some of their peers in Poland’s underground, Necrobiosis was not shy about borrowing riffs. Whereas bands like Terminator lifted bits from Death and Morbid Insane did the same with Obituary, Necrobiosis took direct inspiration from Consuming Impulse by Pestilence. In particular, “Crown of Thorns” features riffs from “Out of the Body”. That said, demos are a time for a band to find their style and develop, so it’s forgivable.

Despite some unoriginality, the songwriting is decent enough. There are moments that hearken back to their earlier days when the band went by a different name and played thrash, such as on “Legions of the Dead”. The musicianship is competent, though sloppy in places, but in a way that almost suits the material. Songs like “Sarcastic Livingconditions” and the title track feature some gloomy tremolo-picked riffs that add to the dark atmosphere, even if underdeveloped. All in all, Behind... is a solid demo and worth checking out for anyone into the late ’80s/early ’90s Polish scene.
