Mysteria Mystica Zofiriana (1994)

Necromass was an Italian band formed in the late '80s. In their earliest days they played death metal but shifted their style by the end of 1993. Their first full-length, Mysteria Mystica Zofiriana, was released in November 1994 and offers a short but impactful dose of aggressive black metal.

This record has a raw, blasphemous feeling that's just dripping with hate. The guitar tone has a sharp edge that gives the riffs a sense of lethality and the drums add to the bludgeoning effect. The vocals sound possessed with malevolent fury, and even the death metal bits that slip in only add to the violent sound. There are still some darker tremolo melodies that give the music a haunting atmosphere at times, along with clean guitars and keyboards. That said, the overall vibe is hellish and intense.

Necromass definitely had their own sound here, as I can't really think of anything to compare it to. That fact alone, that it doesn't sound like some tenth-rate clone of everything else from this period, says enough. Highlights include "Sodomatic Orgy of Hate" and "Sadomasochistic Tallow Doll".
