Cannibal Sex (1993)

Necrophil was an obscure Polish death metal band formed in 1989. Their first full-length, Cannibal Sex, was released on cassette in 1993. The style is very similar to early Cannibal Corpse, especially Butchered at Birth and Tomb of the Mutilated. The drumming in particular feels very close to that, and the riffs wouldn’t be out of place on those albums either. The production is thick but there is still a sense of space, and it suits the material.

The vocals are the usual '90s meathead growls, more guttural and limiting. The songs are often quite short, with a few tracks only lasting a matter of seconds, which always felt pointless to me. Nevertheless, there are a lot of good riffs, even traces of thrash, and the songwriting is solid. The highlight, and longest song, is definitely “Kill Me.” It’s crushingly slow, creating a gloomy feeling and somehow memorable. This is one of the only tracks with an English title as the rest are in their native Polish.

By this point, the death metal scene was flooded with garbage, making it tough to sift through for hidden gems. Necrophil didn’t overstay their welcome. They came, vomited forth a demo and an album, then vanished. As far as ’90s death metal goes, Cannibal Sex is a really solid release and definitely worth checking out.
