Putrefact Death (1988)

Necrophiliac formed in Mexico in the mid-'80s. Their sole demo under that name, Putrefact Death, was recorded and released in 1988. This is solid death/thrash with kind of an archaic sound and roots that clearly go back to early in the decade. "False Church" features rhythms and solos that wouldn’t have sounded out of place on Slayer’s Show No Mercy. The material is strong, with vicious riffs and barbaric vocals that carry a sense of urgency without sounding frantic. The transitions are smooth and everything flows well, even if it's on the raw and primitive side. The tremolo melodies have a somewhat gloomy feel to them, especially on "Depravation", while still retaining an overall savagery.
The production is very similar to Tormentor's The Seventh Day of Doom or Crawling in Vomits from Treblinka, that "small sound" that haunts some late '80s demos. The guitars buzz like a dying wasp, with barely any distortion or weight behind them, while the drums tap along like someone nervously drumming their fingers on a desk. The music is fast and aggressive, but the recording somewhat neuters the impact. It's probably a result of low-quality gear, cheap overdrive pedals instead of real amp distortion, weak mic placement, and lazy mixing. It feels more brittle than feral.
That said, it still retains a certain charm, and the songs are strong enough to convey a feeling of darkness and ferocity. Putrefact Death is a solid dose of death/thrash that embodies the underground spirit of the era. Anyone into raw demo tapes like this should definitely give it a listen.
