Abduction of Limbs (1990)

Old Funeral was a short-lived band from Norway. Released in July 1990, Abductions of Limbs is a solid offering of raw and evil death metal. For a demo, the sound is decent, just clear enough for everything to be heard without turning into a muddy mess like so many others. The opening moments of the title track carry a sense of doom not unlike Finland’s Abhorrence, but most of the music blasts forward at a frenzied pace. There are still traces of thrash that add to the ’80s feeling. The vocals are insane, possessed screams and raspy vomits that add to the hellish atmosphere throughout. This is easily one of the best recordings any of these guys were involved in. If you like vicious and deranged death metal, Abduction of Limbs is worth a listen.

Devoured Carcass (1991)

In 1991, Old Funeral released the Devoured Carcass E.P. The band had gone through some lineup changes since their last recording, and the sound here reflects that. The vocals are deeper, the guitars seem to be tuned lower, and the material is generally slower. Instead of the pure, vicious aggression they showed on Abduction of Limbs, the atmosphere here is more ominous. There’s still some faster material, most notably on the title track, but the overall focus is on the mid-paced, doomier parts. It’s a solid release, though it falls in line with a lot of standard death metal of the era, similar to what was coming out of Sweden, Finland, and the US at the time. Still worth a listen.
