Illusions (1988)

The first Sadus album, Illusions, was released in 1988 and delivers nearly half an hour of blistering thrash metal. This is intense, face-ripping stuff that immediately brings to mind the faster moments of Slayer, Dark Angel, and Kreator. It leans toward death/thrash at times, thanks to the constant speed, occasional tremolo bursts, and gritty, shrieked vocals. Still, the songwriting sticks mostly to classic thrash patterns, just played at hyperspeed. The overall sound is chaotic, helped along by the short, frantic lead guitar solos.
The production is fairly rough and suits the material, though the bass is mixed too high and tends to smooth things out a bit. It dulls the impact of the guitars and undercuts some of the aggression that this kind of music thrives on. That said, Illusions is a strong record, in the same league as Demolition Hammer’s Necrology demo or Morbid Saint’s debut. This shows Sadus at their most vicious, and it’s well worth a listen if you’re into hellish, savage thrash. Highlights include “Certain Death”, “Torture” and “Hands of Fate”.
