Moravské nářez (1993)

Sax was a thrash metal band hailing from Czechoslovakia. Their second L.P. Moravské nářez was released in 1993 and shows a definite improvement over their debut, largely due to the fact that they recruited a new vocalist this time around. This guy's voice is rougher and suits the material far better. The music here is tight, sharp thrash with a lot of intensity. This is rather underproduced for the time and the sound works a lot better for the music than the kind of production found on Kat's Bastard, for example. The bass is a bit too high in the mix, which can dull the guitar’s edge, but the riffs still cut through with a thin, harsh tone.

The songwriting leans more toward the technical side, especially compared to a band like Debustrol, with lots of variation and some unexpected shifts in rhythm. There are definitely traces of Bay Area and mid-to-late '80s Anthrax in here. The album isn’t totally flawless as there are a few awkward moments but the stronger moments more than make up for that. The best parts are definitely when they just blast away with furious riffs, pounding drums and blistering lead solos. Moravské nářez is definitely a solid thrash album and worth a listen. Highlights include “Uhnívat zaživa” and “Popravčí píseň”.
