Fire Turns Everything Black (1995)

Recorded in December 1995, Fire Turns Everything Black is the second demo from Summon. This is intense and hellish black/death with a bit of thrash seamlessly blended in. The guitars have a raw tone and sit higher in the mix than everything else, which is perfect for this kind of material. The lead solos hearken back to early Slayer, brief bursts that come out of nowhere, burning you with sudden hellfire. The vocals are raspy and blasphemous, reminiscent of Quorthon.

Throughout the entirety of this demo, the aggression and hatred are overflowing. Tracks like “Burning Black Desire” and “Tales of Immortality” come closest to pure black metal with their dark tremolo riffs and blasting drums, while a song like “Praising to a Blackened Moon” includes more chromatic death metal passages. The best song on here, however, is the utterly vicious “Enter into Eternal Oath”, which just tears the flesh right off your face with relentless riffs and demonic vocals. There’s something about this one that makes it more memorable than the rest, though it’s all incredibly consistent and there are no weak points at all.

Summon definitely stood apart from most other American bands at the time. Fire Turns Everything Black has a raw and genuine spirit that sharply contrasts with the trendy, polished garbage that was dominating the underground. If you want something that actually possesses a violent and dark feeling, this is highly recommended.
