Evil of This World (1990)

Terminator was yet another short-lived band from Poland. Their 1990 demo, Evil of This World, stands as their sole release. It might be notable to some that a couple of the members went on to join the much more prolific Dead Infection. However, the killer death/thrash found on this tape is much better than what they went on to do.

The sound here is fairly raw but discernible, with a thin, sharp sound that adds a vicious feeling to the music. In some way the mix is reminiscent of Slaughter Lord. The riffs show influence from early Death, from the chromatic passages and even to the slower sections. Even though the production is muddy, the Slayer-esque lead solos cut through to add a sense of chaos along with the deep, hateful vocals. Despite what one might expect based on the lo-fi sound, the songwriting is actually well developed. None of the tracks feel repetitive and there is enough variation to keep things interesting. It definitely doesn't feel like they just threw these songs together right before recording. As well, the playing is tight and there are no awkward transitions.

Evil of This World is as solid as any other death metal being released around this time, demo or otherwise. It does come off as a bit derivative of their influences at times, with some moments leaning toward plagiarism, but they still pull it off well. It's too bad that this band, like so many in the Polish underground, disappeared after this. Terminator certainly demonstrated promise and could have done more. At any rate, this is worth a listen.
