Out of Sanity (1990)

Thanatos was a Polish band that existed only briefly before changing their name. Their 1990 demo Out of Sanity delivers a short, frenzied blast of utterly vicious death/thrash. The riffs shred with intensity, the vocals are hoarse and maniacal, and the raw, lo-fi production suits the chaos perfectly. The band plays with an almost feral energy that makes it feel like things might fall apart at times, but that only adds to the hellish atmosphere. This demo is the aural equivalent of being thrown into a pile of razor wire.

I’m not sure what possessed the Poles in the late ’80s, but they were definitely possessed by the same demons that wreaked havoc in South America a few years earlier. Traces of early Sepultura can be heard, along with Slayer and demo-era Death. Out of Sanity is an accurate title, and at just under 15 minutes, there’s hardly time to catch your breath. Thanatos shows up, rips through five tracks, and then disappears. If you like raw, aggressive death/thrash, this is highly recommended.
