Phantasmagoria (1989)

Recorded and released in 1989, Phantasmagoria is the debut album from The Mist. This is solid thrash metal from Brazil in the same vein as Explicit Hate, Attomica, and Chakal. The studio and engineer behind this album also worked with many of those bands and others, and you can tell production was improving because this record sounds quite good. The guitars have a sharp, metallic tone, the drums hit with power, and everything is balanced in the mix. The sound is full and heavy without losing its edge or sounding polished.

Korg’s sinister, deathlike vocals cut through everything perfectly. The material is raw and aggressive but varied. The band does not play at full speed the entire time since the song structures use different pacing to create atmosphere. The songs develop as they go, showing the band’s skill and thoughtfulness. Phantasmagoria is packed with classic ‘80s thrash riffs. “The Enemy” features old-school galloping riffs and epic melodies that prove the band’s metal roots run deep. The lead guitar solos add a powerful, sometimes epic layer to the songs.

While the album shares similarities with Sepultura, most obvious on tracks like “Hate” and “Barbed Wire Land (At War)”, the overall feeling here is something unique. The Mist’s debut is quite underrated and never seemed to get the attention it deserved. Honestly, it stands as one of the strongest thrash metal albums from 1989, not just within Brazil but anywhere.
