Power and Pain (1986)

Released in February 1986, Power and Pain is the first L.P. from Whiplash. This is raw and energetic speed/thrash that sounds a lot closer to something like Exciter than to the likes of Slayer or Kreator. While this is aggressive and features somewhat harsh vocals, there is no dark or evil feeling whatsoever. It's more like a fist in the face than any kind of macabre ritual. Musically, the influence of albums like Kill 'Em All and Bonded by Blood comes through, both in the riffing and in the sharp, intricate lead guitar solos.

The vocals are somewhat unique in that they border on black/death on tracks like "Stirring the Cauldron" but on songs like "Last Man Alive" and "Nailed to the Cross" he maintains a rough sound but also tries to sing along with the melody. The album barely lasts over half an hour but it's full of memorable material and showcases Whiplash at their very best. Sad to say, they never sounded this good again. Along with the aforementioned songs, "Spit On Your Grave" is another standout. Power and Pain is a solid record and worth a listen.
